In her radio program airing around 5pm last July 31, with her “partner” broadcaster, repeatedly announced and critic on a certain child being hospitalized in the province of Negros for inadvertently eating “vetsin” (common name for monosodium glutamate) added on their cooked rice for their meal without any other viand due to poverty. According to the two broadcasters it was an accidental mix instead of salt which is the usual practice of households very much below the poverty line.
The Philippines Bureau of Food and Drugs as well as the US Food and Drug Administration approved “vetsin” or monosodium glutamate (MSG), the popular local brand is Aji-No-Moto, as a food additive with a GMP status. This status meaning “Good Manufacturing Practice” technically designates MSG without a defined “toxic” level and thus may be used until it is able to attain its desired food manufacturing result, which is to enhance flavor.
Decades ago has it when the original hoax on MSG being toxic created the scare at a global scale necessitating even the original Japanese manufacturer of MSG to conduct its own study to determine if it really does have toxicity. This was already been disproved since then that made it available in the market for household use. Broadcasting the incident in Negros province as related to the MSG without employing even this common knowledge is a gross neglect of media responsibility to the public.
