Baron Geisler nervously but excitedly read his speech for his best actor award for the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival held July 20 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Best actor performance was Baron’s portrayal of a gay TV show producer who makes a documentary about a homosexual teacher brutally killed in his home.
Aside from his mother Baron, the lead character of the Cinemalaya entry Jay, also dedicated his award to the people whom he said did not judge him prematurely somehow referring to some recent events that he got involved with in the mainstream movie industry. Francis Xavier Pasion is the man behind the entry Jay which was likewise chosen as Best Film "for its sheer originality, its energetic storytelling, its mastery of digital technology”.
The film Jay was the unanimous choice among the five-panel jury, according to French critic Max Tessier which he headed. He added that it wasn’t easy making the choice among the ten full length entries in the festival. Other jury members include film actor Cesar Montano; film critic and writer Lito Zulueta; Ansgar Vogt, Berlin International Film Festival programmer; Kim Ji-Seok, co-founder and program director of the Pusan International Film Festival and Max Tessier, Asian and Japanese cinema expert and artistic consultant for international film festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival.
Topping the awards night is the best actress award that was awarded to Mylene Dizon who did not prepare a speech as she was surprised when she was called as Best Actress for her portrayal of a dying person in the movie 100 together with her alter ego played by Eugene Domingo which bagged the best supporting actress award for herself.
And for the best supporting actor Yul Servo's received the award for his portrayal of an NPA rebel in Tara Illenberger's film Brutus including Special Jury Price as well as Best Original Music for Joey Ayala's ethnic-inspired creations. Brutus also tied with the movie Huling Pasada for the Best Cinematography Award.
